Not Invisible

of any size or plus size.…You are not invisible! I am Evie, of Evies Plus Size Fashions and a passionate advocate for women over 50 to be seen and to look gorgeous no matter your age or size. I speak as a size 18-20AU [&UK] (14-16USA) woman in her 60’s who designs and makes clothing to flatter you, as I feel such a huge gap in the marketplace exists. Fashion companies seem to put us in a “box” after we reach a certain age, and insist on shapeless clothing or generic styles that are repeated year after year with just a fabric update, that they want us to hide away in. I don’t see much individual styling between a lot of brands that target the older woman. At a mature age, we are in the prime of our lives, with loads of wisdom and experience, (mostly, no longer at the mercy of those raging hormones….) Many of us have been through lots of life’s ups and downs, and I, for one, will not be tucked away in a closet full of chain store polyester “loose-tent-let-us-be-invisible” outfits.

Working in designing and manufacturing. Fifteen of that was owning and managing my own fashion boutique, where I catered for all ages and all sizes, and especially plus sizes.

I know about the upper arm situation, the wrinkly decolletage, and the tummies that expand with menopause. I know about top heavy shapes and pear shapes. I know how to design and cut flattering lines that can make you look amazing. I saw many different bodies in my store and it led to the way I thought about design and pattern cutting. With the stock I purchased to on-sell, the sizing was often way off – i.e. fashion companies had not jumped on board with the times of real womens’ sizing in the new millenium ……as in size 16AU and UK now being the average – [12USA], and it was a constant frustration to me that great and stylish clothes were mostly not available over a size 16AU. As such, I developed my own size chart for manufacturing my designs based on what I had observed in store. Most of my garments where possible will always have an elasticised panel in the back to allow for the differences in wider/narrower backs in ratio to a bust size, for example.

I think it is so very important to carry our inner youthfulness into later life, when society is so ageist, and I often hear a widely held belief that women over 50 become invisible. WE ARE NOT INVISIBLE…..
